You’re able to use many online government services through the Government Gateway. The services available through the Government Gateway include things like HMRC, the DVLA, local council services, the Department for Work and Pensions and other government services. Here is a full list of services available through the Government Gateway.
To access these services, you need to set up a Government Gateway ID, which is pretty straightforward. Here’s what info you’ll need to set up your account:
- Your name
- Your date of birth
- Your National Insurance number
- Your email address
To get your user ID you’ll need to create a password. Then, you’ll be able to register for and log in to the services you’d like to use.
When you register, you need to pick at least one service you want to use through the Government Gateway. Not quite sure why… It’s just the way it is! Once you pick one, the department that offers that service will need to confirm you are who you say you are. Once they’ve done this, you’ll receive an activation code by email or through the post.
If it’s being sent via snail mail, you should expect to receive your code within seven days. It will be faster by email. Once you receive the code, you need to enter it on the Government Gateway website using the instructions that come with the code.
Remember, the activation code will expire 28 days after the date on the letter/email. So make sure you don’t forget!
Once you’ve completed this process for one service via the Government Gateway, you’ll be able to register for more services by logging in. Because you’ve already completed the above registration process, registering for additional services will be a lot quicker and easier!
